Melanoma, the most aggressive type of skin cancer, is among the top 3 of the most common forms of cancer among young people. So be sure to know what it is and what to look out for. The Dutch Melanoma Foundation (Stichting Melanoom) wants to help you to better understand this.
From head to toe
Was that mole already there? Has it grown? By thoroughly inspecting yourself you can give better answers to these kinds of questions. Dermatologists recommend that you check your skin from head to toe regularly. The map below indicates what you should look out for when checking your skin Ask a friend to check your back and also check their. Because looking for suspicious spots on your own back is quite difficult.
More about the campaign
To create more attention for melanoma among young people, we have developed a summer campaign. In this we respond to the summer holiday feeling with the slogan 'Discover Your Spot’. In the summer you want to chill, hang out with your friends in the sun, have a drink, BBQ and cool off in the water. Where do we prefer to do that? In lovely places in the city, but certainly also on undiscovered places in nature. And that's where the inspiration for our campaign video came from.
The protagonist in our campaign film is a young woman who is at a breathtaking location. Really an undiscovered place. She is holding the hand of her boyfriend, who tells the story. The intention of the video is to put the viewer on the wrong track. At first the viewer gets the idea that they are just on vacation and have discovered a super nice spot. But at a certain point it becomes clear that the girl has a strange spot on her body: a melanoma. They did not know what it was, did not take any action and on the basis of the images and the voiceover it becomes clear that they are too late; the girl has passed away.
The video makes it clear why it is so important to know how you can recognize a melanoma and that you should go to a doctor if you have any moles you do not trust. Hence the ambiguous slogan Discover Your Spot.
A suspicious mole ... what to do?
Don’t panic. Not every spot is a melanoma. Nevertheless, you should visit the doctor if there is any doubt. He or she can refer you to a dermatologist so that the spot can be properly examined.
With melanoma is extremely important to be on time. A melanoma that is detected and removed early can be cured very well. Then the chance of survival is almost 100%. But melanoma still is the most aggressive form of skin cancer. It can quickly spread to other parts of the body. A metastatic melanoma is difficult to treat and has a much worse prognosis. So go to the doctor if you are in doubt; better to be safe than sorry.
